Cambridge Modern Jazz
A springboard for incredible musical talent, Cambridge Modern Jazz has been showcasing the best national and international artists for 53 years.
The voluntary-run organisation has created countless ‘you heard them here first’ moments as rising stars who fledge at CMJ go on to become bone fide jazz superstars. The recent rostrum of extraordinary acts has included thrilling pianist Sultan Stevenson, jazz guitarist Tom Ollendorff, saxophonist Emma Rawicz and the captivating Vein Trio. Since 2010, performances have taken place at the atmospheric Hidden Rooms, which, owing to its subterranean location, edgy feel and superior cocktails, has been likened to the jazz bars of New York.
Cambridge Modern Jazz was founded in 1972 by Joan Morrell who was passionate about giving a stage to aspiring musicians of many backgrounds and cultures. Early performances, hosted at the Portland Arms, included the exhilarating South African Township Comets, the eclectic John Ethridge and saxophonist Iain Ballamy. CMJ has moved to various venues over the years, from pub rooms to Kettle’s Yard, when jazz artists would perform amidst priceless artefacts!
When Joan fell ill in 2010, she gave her blessing for current chairman David Gower to take over running CMJ alongside John Blandford. Jazz devotee David, who has a background in communications, oversees front-of-house and press whilst experienced booker John lines up the artists. Sadly, Joan died in 2011, but her name remains firmly above the door, with CMJ faithfully continuing her legacy, giving aspiring and established jazz artists a platform to share their music. CMJ links up with Cambridge Jazz Festival each November as part of their wider focus.
So, if you fancy discovering the next big thing in jazz, venture down the steps to Hidden Rooms and prepare to lose yourself in mesmeric music.
