Founded by Paula in 2017, Cakeolicious began as a part-time venture from her Cambridge home kitchen alongside her career as a scientist. What started as a seriously tasty hobby became a full-time business during the pandemic, when demand for birthday cakes and afternoon teas grew non-stop.
Paula has been baking from an early age, learning alongside her mum and making treats for family and friends throughout her life. When she decided to swap her lab coat for an apron, Paula discovered that her background in the fragrance and flavour industry brought valuable transferable skills to her kitchen. Her scientific understanding of smell, taste and method development now goes into every bake, ensuring cakes that are consistently light, fluffy and full of flavour.
“There’s something so rewarding about mixing flour, sugar, butter and eggs together, then opening the oven to the sight and smell of a perfectly risen sponge,” says Paula. Turning a customer’s idea into the perfect cake for their celebration is an art she truly loves. The joy on a customer’s face when they see the finished cake is what motivates her most.
Working from her Cambridge home-based kitchen, Paula creates fondant-iced and buttercream cakes for all occasions and is always “up for a challenge,” whether for a personal celebration or a corporate event. Prestigious commissions have included a retirement cake for the founder of Hotel Chocolat, a ‘50 Years in Science’ cake for the British Antarctic Survey, and a milestone anniversary cake for Wandlebury Country Park, cut by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.
Alongside celebration cakes, Cakeolicious also supplies handmade afternoon tea packages and offers beautiful vintage china for hire. Homemade and handcrafted by Paula, a Cakeolicious cake or afternoon tea is guaranteed to be a memorable highlight of any occasion.
