With the inspiring slogan ‘Good Food Should Feed People, Not Bins’, FreeFoodVan is on a mission to reduce food waste whilst helping those in need.
The planet-friendly enterprise has been devised by innovative Cambridge businessman, Jason Baldwin, who runs Aristocaters, the city’s biggest supplier of fresh sandwiches. A self-confessed ‘problem solver’, Jason was alarmed at the sheer volume of good food being disposed of, so he wanted a professional collection solution which would also fight food poverty. A subsequent meeting with Cambridge University about ways to reduce food waste proved to be the catalyst and FreeFoodVan was born, with its first green electric van hitting the streets.
FreeFoodVan is now inviting local cafés, offices, colleges, universities, hospitals and food businesses to join its surplus FreeFoodVan collection programme. With Aristocaters already employing over 30 staff and making 70 deliveries each morning, the business has the infrastructure and capability to support FreeFoodVan and food banks across Cambridge. To get onboard, local businesses and institutions can subscribe to have surplus food collected and take part or simply sponsor the mission of a more sustainable future.
FreeFoodVan now have a new sponsored Community Freefood Hub, which can be placed in the heart of a community. Here, the public can drop off labelled ambient food, which can then be handed out to those in need. Jason hopes that FreeFoodVan will become ‘the Deliveroo of food collection’, building stronger communities and ensuring that those facing hardship no longer go hungry, both in Cambridge, and then eventually nationwide.
