You may well have sampled the delights of The Garden Kitchen on a visit to their café in Cambridge University Botanic Garden, and now you can enjoy a mix of café and culture with a visit to their site at Cambridge’s renowned contemporary art gallery, Kettle’s Yard.
It really is a dream location – close to the city centre, housed within the recently developed gallery building, and with the added advantage in the summer of the use of one of Cambridge’s prettiest church gardens next door at Saint Peter’s. Of course, we thoroughly recommend a look around the gallery and wonderful Kettle’s Yard house, but just going for the café itself is firmly on the list of ‘must visit’.
The Garden Kitchen started life in 2005 when current owner, Andrew Smith, received a loan from the Prince’s Trust, which he used to buy a van to serve healthy fast food from. Now in 2024 his original philosophy of using quality, basic ingredients and making them into something great, is still very much at the heart of everything he does. Along with using environmentally friendly alternatives for all the disposables (cutlery, coffee cup lids etc), working with local suppliers where possible, is also part of Andrew’s ethos.
The food menu sees a daily change, but firm favourites such as their amazingly varied salads, and falafel wraps are welcome fixed features. Other treats include gluten-free chocolate brownies, ‘Cake of the Day’, a vegan apple strudel and date flapjacks.
