‘Open-minded’ and ‘lucky’ are two of the ways Cambridge-based photographer Jean-Luc Benazet describes himself. Hailing from the south of France, Jean-Luc has a love of languages which influenced his studies and led him to a career as a translator. During his student days in Toulouse a friend encouraged him to join him at a workshop in picture taking and film processing. Despite not owning his own camera he said ‘yes’ and, using the teacher’s camera, he went on to take two of the best pictures of that workshop. He was hooked on photography from that day and the following Christmas his dad bought him his first camera, a Minolta x-300s, and he has been taking photos ever since.

Jean-Luc moved to Cambridge in 1998 and set up his photography business in 2005. His early photography years saw him experiment with a wide range of genres taking him to the glitzy Cannes Film Festival and on the books for a football photography agency. Having played the keyboard in a band himself, the music scene was hugely interesting to Jean-Luc and he would sometimes shoot five gigs a week capturing musical icons such as Amy Winehouse. His interest in street photography took him to Cuba where he was lucky enough to photograph his subjects in close range, leading him to develop an interest in portrait photography, and closer to home the beautiful city of Cambridge has provided plentiful photo opportunities over the years.

What started as a hobby has become a life-long passion and now 12 cameras, 495 weddings and 2,495,000 pictures later, Jean-Luc is continuing to say ‘yes’ to new opportunities in order to evolve and grow his business. Covering all aspects of photography with a specialism in portrait and corporate photography, Jean-Luc is happy to discuss your requirements.
