John Ball is passionate about selling carpets, seeing Mill Road thrive and providing top-notch customer service – and gets to pursue all three through his family-run business. The owner of Cut Price Carpets & Decorating on Mill Road, John and his wife Irene specialise in affordable carpets, vinyl and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) from brands including Karndean, Camaro and Victoria Carpets. A former painter, John also offers a professional decorating service meaning customers can complement beautiful new flooring with freshly-painted walls!
The business was launched in 1974 by John and his father-in-law, the late great Cliff Summers. The pair, whose respective families have been selling carpets for over 100 years, opened their first shop in Peterborough. They also sold carpets and rugs on markets, from Hitchin to Huntingdon, but as the early mornings and freezing winters took a toll, they sought new premises on Mill Road. Intending to trial their current showroom for one winter, John and Cliff were so struck by the friendly, community feel of Mill Road, they decided to stay. Twenty-nine years on, business is booming, with loyal customers writing glowing reviews, praising ‘quick efficient service’, ‘excellent standards’ and ‘genuine care’. Customers also have a soft spot for Sybil, a three-year-old mare who often helps John to deliver carpets on a horse-drawn cart over the Mill Road bridge!
John, who is Vice Chair of Mill Road Traders Association, and his quality fitters (Alex, Matt and son John William), work with domestic and commercial clients, from first-time buyers to landlords, pubs, golf clubs and estate agents. Customers benefit from a free no-obligation quote and the floor specialists will pay home visits to those unable to access the shop.
