Stepping in to The Orator on Cambridge’s Round Church Street you are met with a piece of history. Located in the same building as the Cambridge Union Society, the world’s oldest debate society which has promoted free speech since 1815, it’s hard not to be impressed by the history of the venue. Following a major refurbishment, The Orator opened in May 2021.

The stylish bar and restaurant have a bright and airy feel – the perfect place for enjoying a meal from the all-day dining menu or sampling one of the custom cocktails. The menu, which changes quarterly and makes the most of seasonal and local produce, suits tastebuds and pockets of all sizes, featuring fresh salads, comforting mac and cheese and hearty burgers.

The Society’s rooms are available for hire throughout the year around the debates and speaker events timetable, which take place during the Cambridge University term. The historical rooms provide a special setting for birthday or anniversary celebrations and also make an inspiring space for networking or teambuilding events. There are also a variety of Christmas offerings available – from traditional festive meals in the private dining room to a dinner and party package in the debating room itself.

From Winston Churchill to Bill Gates, over the years some of the world’s greatest minds have spoken at The Union, and subjects from art to modern conflict have been debated by members, who historically have always been students at Cambridge. Now members of the public can join the Society with an Open Membership. Priced £350 a year, the membership includes access to selected debates and speaker events at the Union and online, as well as including a 20 per cent discount on food and drink in The Orator.

If you’re looking for spirited dining, drinking and debate, you’ll find it at The Orator.
