Fifi gives credit to her family genes for her highly successful wedding and celebration cake business, Fifi’s Cakery. Her Nan was a baker and her grandfather was an artist, who often designed the cakes her Nan made. Her son has played a significant role in her success too. When she offered to make a car cake for his birthday he said, great, I’d like a Toyota Corolla with a Castrol GTX logo on the bonnet, please. He thought the cake was very good but the headlights weren’t quite right. Getting the headlights right for future car cakes helped Fifi hone the decorating skills that are now stunningly deployed in her cakes.
Flavour is also something that Fifi is passionate about. She tailors her cakes to the flavours her customers want but a real favourite is Fifi’s raspberry cake: a vanilla sponge bursting with fresh raspberry pieces, the layers sandwiched together with raspberry-infused fresh buttercream that is beautifully pink, the whole cake tasting light and fresh and fruity, a real crowd-pleaser, which is exactly what you want at a wedding.
When Fifi’s not making cakes, she’s running baking and decorating classes and all sorts of people come along, from absolute beginners to very experienced bakers. They all go home with an armful of cakes, her very own wedding cake recipe, and the memory of a lovely day out. Fifi particularly likes teaching the mums who want to make a wedding cake for their children’s weddings. Their bakes are special, she says, because there’s so much love in them.
Wedding couples are given a sample box of cupcakes, two each of six flavours. If you want a celebration cake, Fifi’s just started a takeaway service so you can sample her flavours before choosing by buying a cupcake (or two). And as the Cakery is in a converted stable block in a field on a farm just outside Cambridge with plenty of free parking, it really couldn’t be easier.
