Tax returns, budgets, forecasts; words that can strike fear in the hearts of busy sole traders and small businesses with barely enough time to do the day job! So we thank our lucky stars for Hannah Collier and her highly-proficient team at Cambridge Payroll, who effortlessly and accurately take on these tasks – with a smile – to ensure companies can grow and flourish.
Though ‘Payroll’ features in the business name, Hannah and her colleagues – Alison Cooke (bookkeeping manager) and Svetlana Davis (payroll and bookkeeping assistant) – offer a much wider range of services, from cashflow forecasting and credit control, to self-assessment tax returns and pension scheme management.
Hannah’s background is in the hospitality industry – she actually launched All Bar One in Cambridge back in 1998 – but her mum, uncles and grandad were all accountants. She never planned to follow in their footsteps, but when Hannah took over The Green Man in Grantchester, she was trained to do the bookkeeping.
Discovering a talent and passion for working with numbers, she went on to hone those skills at Tyrrell & Company in Sawston, then decided to go it alone in 2014, launching Cambridge Payroll.
The team work with a variety of clients, running weekly and monthly payroll for individuals, up to companies with 200 staff. And on the bookkeeping side, regular customers include Brand Recruitment and city centre boutique spa hotel, The Varsity.
Though bookkeeping isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Hannah finds it incredibly rewarding, relishing the opportunity to demystify the more bamboozling aspects of tax and accounts. The team also foster close relationships with clients, and have earned a reputation for their friendly, accessible approach.
Looking ahead, from April 2019, Cambridge Payroll is rebranding and will be utilising Cloud-based software, which promises to be more time-effective and user-friendly all round. Tax looks set to become far less taxing. Thank goodness.
