Literature Cambridge: Elizabeth von Arnim
Elizabeth von Arnim: Women and Freedom
Von Arnim’s first novel, Elizabeth and her German Garden (1898), was an instant best seller and set the tone for her later work. This course will study this first book and trace the development of her ideas about motherhood, marriage, friendship, adultery and, among other topics, the soothing properties of the natural world for those with access to it. The course focuses on four novels including two of her most enduringly popular, as well as two equally accomplished, but lesser-known, works.
This is a live online course, with four fortnightly sessions, from 8th November to 20th December. For tickets and more information, click here.
