It’s true that both sides of Mill Road bridge in Cambridge are well-served for places to satisfy your coffee fix. On the Romsey side (recently described as ‘one of the hippest neighbourhoods in Britain’), there is one indie establishment that has gone that bit further and become not just a great coffee shop, but also a real destination for visitors as well as a hub for the local community.

Owner Duncan Mason and his team have been running Urban Larder since 2015. During this time, they have become known as ‘the larder family’ which accurately describes the genuinely warm and friendly atmosphere created by the country-modern vibe of the interior as well as all who work there. From parents with their kids through to students and local freelance folk, meeting up ‘at the Larder’ is like a home-from-home.

Now to the coffee. This comes from Bury St Edmunds’ supplier Butterworth & Son (Caffeine Magazine Micro Roastery Espresso winner), is an espresso blend of four beans – and is really very good! There’s also a wide selection of loose-leaf teas to choose from and locally-sourced hot chocolate.

On the food-front, the Urban Larder serves up a daily feast of colourful salads, sausage rolls and scotch eggs, soups, savouries, cakes (including doughnuts to die for) and some of the best sourdough toasties in town. All their food is made either in-house or locally on Mill Road itself and of course you can enjoy eating in or taking away.

As with all good larders, there’s a carefully-chosen range of produce to buy and take home too. Oils, chutneys and jams fill the shelves alongside the same teas that are served behind the counter and cards from local artists. You can also buy the amazing coffee too and have it ground to order – just the way you like it.

If all that wasn’t enough there is now ‘Urban Later’, when the team keep the door open until late for customers to enjoy all of the above along with a glass or two of something a little stronger.
