Did you know that the small shop front across from the entrance of King’s College conceals such a large collection of British contemporary jewellery; art and craft; paintings and prints; household ceramics and glass; bronze, ceramic, glass and wooden sculptures; cards, scarves and ties – a real treasure trove by 450 British artists?
Step inside and experience the thrill of exploring each of the seven rooms on three floors, where you can compare one item to another – encouraged by a member of Primavera's friendly team to touch and hold the artwork. This makes Primavera such a different experience from the internet.
There is immediate availability, at a range of prices and choices, yet you are paying no more than at Cambridge Open Studios or online, and at the heart of the Primavera (meaning ‘spring’ in Italian) experience is the knowledge that your money is spent supporting British artists, many of them local.
With arched doorways, low ceilings, crooked corridors and stairs, and its amazing location and views, Primavera is a bold contrast to other galleries. Each piece is commissioned direct from the artist – a process which forges great relationships and enables the gallery to learn the story behind every item.
Items on display include collectible ceramics by Lucie Rie and Bernard Leach (both of whom personally sold their work from Primavera); jewellery by Arthur Gaskin, Wendy Ramshaw, Malcolm Betts and many wonderful local jewellers; glass sculptures by Peter Layton and Amanda Brisbane.
Whether you are just wanting to browse and enjoy the experience, looking to make a personal investment, seeking a unique painting to hang in your house, searching for the right piece of handmade jewellery for that particular outfit that fits your budget, or simply wanting to pick up an original birthday card, Primavera will have something for you.
