Cheryl Warren Art
Upon first glance Cheryl Warren’s landscape paintings are a striking blend of brushstrokes, some characterised by smudges of vivid colour, others dominated by thick charcoal streaks. There’s depictions of morning mist over a Cornish moor, an explosion of spring flowers at Haslingfield, beached boats at Walberswick or an expanse of eerie fenland. They’re fascinating and captivating, but to Cheryl, each semi-abstract piece portrays so much more than what’s on the surface. They capture a moment in time, immortalising the landscape, the lighting, the atmosphere, the weather, the emotions that scene evoked. In the words of one buyer: ‘they are fearless, free and brave’.
The whole process starts with a stroll along the river or a trudge across a field, camera and sketch book ready for when the environment inspires her.
Back in her studio in Kidman’s Yard - a thriving artistic community, next to Cambridge Artworks – Cheryl takes her oil paints, and begins to commit her memory to canvas, building up the imagery in layers of paint, graphite and pastel ink.
Her eye-catching style has attracted buyers from around the world, with paintings shipped to the United States, France, Germany, Dubai, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They are also in galleries in London, Winchester and Cambridge.
Though modest about her achievements, Cheryl’s résumé is impressive; her training includes studying sculpture at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire, mixed media at Goldsmiths plus an art therapy MA. She’s exhibited and worked at London’s Skylark Gallery and launched Burwash Art at Burwash Manor, Barton, which she passed on in 2015 (it’s now The Art Hound Gallery). These days, she’s happiest in overalls, using her grandmother’s oil paints to bring breath-taking landscapes to life.
