Cambridge Building Society
With banks disappearing from towns and cities at a rate of knots, many customers have been left feeling short-changed. So it’s heartening to see Cambridge Building Society bucking the trend, having opened a glossy flagship store on St Andrew’s Street last year, offering the face-to-face service customers value, as well as innovative digital offerings.
The new ‘store’ as it’s known, is contemporary and open plan, with a paperless office concept, and a customer-centric approach, boasting an expert team, keen to support clients with both their personal and business finances. Located almost exactly on the sight of its first branch, which opened in 1850, it’s a nod to the proud past of the independent mutual society, which remains integral in the community.
When it first launched ‘The Cambridge’ set out its stall as aiming ‘to make every man his own landlord’. Back then savers were given a number, which was printed on a wooden ball, and if their ball emerged from a raffle-style box, they were given a mortgage. Thankfully the system has changed, but the ethos remains, with the society offering a range of competitive mortgages, catering for those with specific mortgage needs – like people who are self-employed, plus a choice of personal and business savings accounts.
One of The Cambridge’s key aims is to make saving easy, whatever a member’s circumstances, and as such they have developed a range of savings accounts including Fixed Term, 100 Day Notice and Easy Access specifically for businesses. Business savings experts are also on hand to give advice.
Today, the Cambridge Building Society has 12 branches, plus a head office on Newmarket Road, and as well as continually investing in its knowledgeable staff, it remains as committed to the community as ever, having raised £30,000 last year in support of 18 charities. Now that’s something to be proud of.
