It’s an internationally-renowned dance company which produces West End stars, its alumni include Caroline Flack and Louie Spence, and its classes are so popular the 500-strong children’s theatre school has a waiting list. It’s fair to say Bodywork Company Cambridge is a class act, offering top-level professional training, but its beginnings were incredibly humble.
The brainchild of professional dancers Theresa and Patrick Kerr, who had performed on cruise ships the world over and brought street dance from New York to British TV screens, Bodywork essentially began with a disco class. Patrick was working with the choreographer of Saturday Night Fever, and he and Theresa launched a class based around the movie’s iconic moves. Booking a small hall on Christ’s Pieces, they rocked up with their record player to find a massive queue. Students even clambered in through the windows, such was the demand!
And so Bodywork began, moving to its current premises in 1983, converting the furniture warehouse on Glisson Road into four beautiful dance studios. The dynamic company has since grown organically, key milestones including the introduction of a pioneering foundation course and a Level 6 Diploma in Dance and Musical Theatre, receiving government accreditation, and in 2015, launching a BTEC qualification in Performing Arts.
Bodywork’s adult classes, including ballet, commercial and hip hop, are incredibly popular, and dancers travel from Australia, America and South Africa to study at the college. No wonder really, as the majority of Theresa’s 23 dance teachers are bona fide West End stars.
Clearly a success on the international stage, Bodywork manages to retain a family feel. Young dancers are given wonderful support, something Theresa believes is essential in such a tough industry. With graduates regularly returning to HQ to become Bodywork’s next generation of dance teachers, it’s a family that will continue to flourish.
